Fantasy football more than a dream for fans

The East Valley Tribune
By Mike Branom

Camaraderie, competition and money makes fantasy football real. The National Football League kicks off its season in less than two weeks, which means this is crunch time for “owners” preparing to select their “teams” of actual flesh-and-blood pro players.

Valley taverns are hosting draft parties, where the bragging and insults fly like the ball in a run-and-shoot offense.

“Edgerrin James, gone,” said Jesse Kessler, manager of Duke’s Sports Bar and Grill in Scottsdale. With that matter-of-fact statement, Kessler performed his duty as commissioner of the bar’s fantasy league, taking a marker to a dry-erase board and scratching out the name of the Arizona Cardinals running back.

Jenna Jameson deflates, quits porn

PORN star Jenna Jameson has had her breast implants taken out - and will quit making smut to focus on her own clothing line and comic book.

Jameson, 33, went under the knife to have the notorious implants removed earlier this month.

She reportedly went from a D cup to a C.

“When I had implants I felt uncomfortable. I would be shy at the beach. I know it sounds funny, but I’d wear high-necked clothes - unless I was at an adult-film convention. So I thought, ‘Why don’t I be who I am and get my real ones back?’,” she told US magazine Us Weekly.

After 57 years of showing movies under the stars, the Clermont Deluxe Drive-In Theatre will go dark this weekend.

Sunday will be the last chance to catch a flick — your choice of a double bill of “Underdog” and “Shrek the Third” or “The Simpsons Movie” and “The Bourne Ultimatum” — at the Clermont.

In June, racing entrepreneur Bill Simpson received zoning change approval from the Hendricks County Commissioners to turn the 20-acre theater site into a motor sports business park.

Games aren’t just for young men these days

By Troy Wolverton
Mercury News

You might think that the face of one of the hottest areas in gaming right now is a young male in his 20s who owns the latest supercharged gaming system from Microsoft or Sony - or both.

But you’d be wrong.

Instead, the epitome of the new-era gamer is a woman in her late 30s or early 40s who plays on an average PC.

Yes, the video game industry seems to have been turned on its head.

FAIRFIELD - When nature calls, there’s no better place in America to take care of business than Jungle Jim’s International Market.

Known beyond Greater Cincinnati for its exotic foods and playful jungle theme, Fairfield’s most-recognized business has been voted to have the nation’s “best” restroom.

Internet voters chose Jungle Jim’s over four other restrooms nationwide - including one in Flushing, Mich. - to win Cintas Corp.’s 2007 America’s Best Restroom Award in what the sponsor said was one of the most hotly contested races since the program began in 2001.

The magic is gone

Prison term can’t replace collection

A man who lost an irreplaceable collection of magic memorabilia worth more than $1 million when his Indian Hill home was set on fire by a drug addict talked about his loss for the first time Tuesday as the arsonist was sent to prison.

Dr. Randall Wolf, a heart surgeon at University Hospital, said it’s both a personal loss - he and his family no longer feel safe - and a loss to the community, which lost a piece of history. “I think the real shame of it is Cincinnati and really the world lost something we can’t get back,” Wolf said.

Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Dennis Helmick sentenced Jarrod Frederick, 26, of Clifton on charges of aggravated arson and burglary. He must spend almost two years in prison followed by six months of alcohol and drug treatment at a locked facility.

‘Superbad’: Geeks Gone Wild

Already dubbed the “American Pie” of the MySpace generation, “Superbad” promises to be this summer’s cure for the back-to-school blahs, simultaneously trafficking in the hoariest cliches of the teen sex comedy genre while slyly sending them up.

Not surprisingly, this trick has been pulled off in a movie produced by Judd Apatow, who has proven to be exceptionally adroit at delivering outrageously raunchy comedy with a self-conscious wink.

Indeed, “Superbad” often plays like a prequel to Apatow’s hit comedy “Knocked Up,” in which Seth Rogen portrayed a dumpy pothead who ultimately gets the babe. In “Superbad” — which Rogen co-wrote — Jonah Hill plays a high school senior who resembles the future Rogen, a chubby, foul-mouthed porn addict (named Seth) who is determined to snag a girlfriend for the summer.

Media Rights Capital, the financing company that backed last year’s film “Babel,” is supporting the two projects. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The programs will appear in a video box that a user would click on to start. The box will be packaged with banner advertising and video ads that will appear either before or after the programming.
